Background of the International Symposium for
the 70th Anniversary of the Tohoku Branch of the Chemical Society of Japan
The roots of the Tohoku Branch of the Chemical Society of Japan go back to 1943, when the Society of the Chemical Industry, Japan, established a branch in Sendai as a regional branch for the Tohoku area. Four years after that, the former Chemical Society of Japan also set up a branch for the Tohoku area in the Department of Chemistry, Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University. These two branches were set up to promote research in the industrial and chemical societies in the Tohoku area, respectively. When the Chemical Society of Japan and the Society of the Chemical Industry, Japan were integrated into the current Chemical Society of Japan in 1948, the Tohoku Branch of the Chemical Society of Japan was launched by merging the two branches. Since that time, the Tohoku Branch has fulfilled its role to enhance communication between the multidisciplinary research fields in chemistry and promote scientific progress from the Tohoku area.
In order to cover all the diverse research interests in chemistry, the Tohoku Branch of the Chemical Society of Japan collaborates with regional branches of other societies (the Society of Polymer Science, Japan, the Japan Society of Analytical Chemistry, the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan, the Society of Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Japan, the Electrochemical Society of Japan, the Society of Materials Science, Japan, the Society of Fiber Science and Technology, Japan, and the Society of Inorganic Materials, Japan) to hold an annual chemistry symposium in the Tohoku area, which generally consists of invited lectures from the different research fields in chemistry and poster presentations.
After the success of the previous symposiums in Morioka (2010), Sendai (2011), and Akita (2012), it is our great pleasure to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Tohoku Branch with an international symposium and have more than 60 invited speakers from all over the world. Furthermore, six special lectures from important professors, including Prof. Ada E. Yonath (Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 2009) and Prof. Yuan T. Lee (Nobel laureate in Chemistry in 1986), are also scheduled for this symposium.

Call for papers
Some sessions will be open to papers by participants, which will be chosen by committee for oral or poster presentations, and we also welcome contributions for poster presentations in all the sessions. All presenters, including special lecturers and invited speakers, are required to send an abstract. Before abstract submission, those who wish to present in the symposium must send the application form, which includes the title of the presentation, names of the presenting authors, and their affiliations, found on the "Abstract Submission" page. The deadline for the application is May 17, 2013. Once the session organizers accept your paper(s), your lecture or poster numbers, which are necessary for preparation of your abstract, will be announced on the symposium homepage in July.
When your abstract is ready for submission, please go to the "Abstract Submission" page again and upload the abstract as a PDF file. The deadline of the abstract submission is August 2, 2013.
